A nice idea but not a good one.

The age limits for an olympic team are under 23 with three over-age players allowed. For many amateur teams that's going to kick a large hole in their team-list, especially the smaller teams who don't have a large pool of under 23 players to choose from.

It's also a bad precedent to have an all Britain play-off for an international competition. It could quite easily be applied to the four UK associations by FIFA. One team represents Britain in every international competition decided by a play-off in the UK before any preliminary rounds.

Not a good precedent to set.

If the amateur side I'm suggesting had a bloody good time before earning a silver medal getting thrashed by Brazil in the final, I'd say that was job done!

There’s an unfortunate Olympic precedent. You may have seen the article in the Telegraph about the exploits of the Cornwall rugby side who (as county champions) represented Britain in 1908. They came up to London, had a jolly good time all round and got slaughtered by Australia in the final. But then that’s rugby union ...
