Just to say you are almost correct with regards Cornwall but you need to remember our ambiguous relationship with the Duchy of Cornwall and our hidden head of state, the Duke.

Full details here on how our constitutional recognition has been hidden from us but never removed: http://duchyofcornwall.eu/

Thanks, Sioeengland. Yes, the opening sentence was intended to be provocative towards those who seek to deny the nationhood of England. England's 'official' status as a nation is more ambiguous than I admit here, and I'm aware of all the efforts on the part of the present government to deny nation status to England. However, ironically, devolution has created the necessity to refer to England occasionally; and even the government has reluctantly to own up to the fact that the 'territorial extent' of much of its legislation is limited to England (see the Draft Legislative Programme). The BBC has also been pulled up recently for not being more explicit about when particular political news stories relate to England only. So they're increasingly not being allowed to get away with it. (See also the posts I've written under the 'say England' category - especially the 'Campaign for Plain England' series.)

England is not recognised as a nation by this Government or the Liberal Democrats.

John Prescott (Welsh) has written "there is no such nationality as English".

Robin Cook (Scot) said on BBC radio "England isn't a nation, it is just a collection of regions".

Gordon Brown constantly, and insultingly, speaks of "the nations and regions of Britain".

So, unfortunately, your opening sentence is wrong, at least to those who seek to expunge Englishness.
